The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. Yes, we love it when we get all the kids together even if there can be some family drama now and then. To handle all the extra things to keep up with, from parties and shopping to making the special treats for our family, we cannot forget to take care of our well-being. Always remember that when we take care of ourselves, we can better care for others. Here are a few reminders.
Prioritize Self-Care:
Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it's reading a book, taking a long walk, or getting a pedicure. Prioritizing your personal self-care will help you manage stress and maintain a positive mindset. If you do this, any family drama that might arise, you will have a better chance to handle it like a pro.
Mindful Eating:
It is so easy to eat unconsciously during the holidays. There are sweets everywhere. Of course, we want to have the fudge and the popcorn balls…just be mindful of it. Don’t overindulge, this only makes us beat ourselves up later. Have the treats but keep them in check, simply be mindful of what you are consuming. Eat when hungry and eat until full.
Stay Hydrated:
With all the festive treats around, it's easy to forget to stay hydrated. Drink your water! Make a conscious effort to drink plenty of water throughout the day. With all the extra goodies we are trying, proper hydration supports our digestion, helps control appetite, and keeps your energy levels up. Drink your water!
Eat meals instead of snacking:
It is so easy to overeat when we are grazing. When possible, try fixing a plate and eating then be done with. This not only helps us from overeating but will help us make better choices. Again, eat when hungry, stop when you are full.
Try to Stay Active:
Physical activity tends to take a backseat during the holidays, but it will make you feel better if you can keep some kind of routine of getting movement. When shopping, park the car for out in the parking area a walk. Be creative in getting extra steps in. This is another tool to help with your digestion. Yes, movement gets your system working. Staying active not only helps with weight management but also boosts mood and reduces stress. Add it anywhere you can.
Get Adequate Sleep:
Get your sleep in. When we are tired, we get cranky. Get your rest. We also can get our immune system down when we are run down. Get your rest. Remember, our bodies repair themselves when they are resting.
Set Realistic Expectations: MOST IMPORTANT!
Things happen, things can change. Set realistic expectations for yourself and others. Understand that not everything will go perfectly, and that's okay. Learn to say no to additional commitments if you're feeling overwhelmed and focus on what truly matters to you. Don’t let little things bother you. Don’t let the small things get in the way of the big things. Brush off any comments or gestures that tend to upset you. Stay focused on the importance of the holidays. If you do get into a situation, breathe. Take deep breaths and get fresh air. There is nothing wrong with excusing yourself from drama.
Hope this helps! Happy THANKSGIVING! 🦃
