The High Cost of Comfort: Embracing Change After 50 for a Stronger, Bolder Life

Updated: Jul 21, 2025

“Aging is the aggressive pursuit of comfort—and the more aggressively we seek it, the faster we age.”

– N. C. Brandão, quoting human biologist Gary Brecka

Let that sink in for a moment.

I recently read about how many aging adults gradually stop reaching, stretching, or walking more than absolutely necessary. All in the name of comfort.

And I get it.

We all love comfort: the warm blanket, the familiar routine, the soothing lie of “I’ll start Monday.”

But here’s the truth I can’t ignore:

If we want to thrive in midlife and beyond, we must start embracing change, on purpose.

Comfort might feel good in the moment, but long-term, it slowly chips away at our vitality.

It weakens our body.

It dulls our creativity.

It disconnects us from our power.

What we do every day becomes what we’re best at. And if we repeatedly avoid challenges, we get really good at staying stuck.

But what if, instead of shrinking into safety, we started embracing change with open arms?

What if we chose small, intentional discomforts that stretch our bodies and our minds?

💥Hold the stretch 30 seconds longer than you want to.

💥Walk instead of nap.

💥Say “yes” to something new. Even if it makes your heart race a little.

These tiny acts of embracing change add up. They build strength, courage, and confidence. They reconnect us with the vibrant, growing women we still are.

Because here’s what I believe, and what I help women realize every day in my coaching practice:

You were not made to shrink.

You were not meant to live small.

You are not too old. You are just getting started.

So let’s stop chasing only comfort.

Let’s start embracing change with boldness, grace, and a little bit of fire.

Let’s age with energy. With strength. With purpose.

You’ve taken care of everyone else. Now, it’s your turn.

Let’s go.
