Let's keep growing ...at any age! We are never too old!

Growing and or learning new stuff is not something that we all do naturally. We have to put some effort into growing. We are never too old! What do I mean by growing? Growing is improving our life in some way. That might be becoming healthier, more knowledgeable, more productive, anything that makes feel more alive! Our basic human needs are to seek pleasure, avoid pain, and expend as little effort as possible! Of course, this is what the cave men did! They hid in the cave, only to leave to hunt and gather food. Some of us have become really good at all three of these traits; seek pleasure, avoid pain and do as little as possible. We have had lots of practice. Unfortunately, it is not beneficial to always be seeking pleasure, avoid pain, and to try to do as little as possible. We become over drinkers, over eaters, and massive Netflix watchers. Now, some of us have might have earned the right (worked entire life) to do what the heck we want. However, I am leaning on the side of us that want more in our life and but keep doing the same things over and over but want different results.

In order to grow, we have to change this triad. We need to develop a new mindset. Growing in ways such as increasing our knowledge is not only healthy and invigorating, it can also be lots of fun. And, this is at any age. It is never ever too late to learn something different. Again, we are never too old! It does not have to be like learning to play the piano, which I would love to do, but it can be to learn to cook new dishes, try a new vegetable for the first time, or even listen to a new music genre. Yes, growing and learning can cause us to be uncomfortable, but that is okay. What is a little discomfort going to hurt? We might actually find a new hobby or a new food. Stepping out of our comfort zone, keeps life way more exciting. Growing can be starting a reading time, beginning a new exercise regimen, or creating a new good habit such as drinking more water each and every day. Yep, drink your water! Maybe you have always been known as an unhealthy eater. You do not always have to be that way. You can start choosing foods in their nature state and become more healthier in a few months. Or, maybe you drink two cokes a day. Try drinking one coke a day and make it a habit that only one coke is all that you need. We become what are daily habits are. I know I have done a post on habits which I want to expand on later. As we age, we can get really comfortable with our routine and end up doing the same thing each and every day. Sounds a little boring. We can learn anything on YouTube. Want to learn to crochet? It can happen. Want to learn to make crème brulee? That too can be found on the internet.

Sometimes stepping out of our comfort of the cave can be intimidating. Yes, doing something for the first time can be a little scary but you might find very rewarding later. I had always said I would never get in a prop plane or drink a green smoothie. I did both on our trip to Alaska...sounds ridiculous now!

I have told you before that taking college algebra again after 40 years was terrifying! I managed to come out fine and with a B! Can you believe it? After all that complaining, moping around that they said I had to take it over, and I survived just fine. I will admit that there were many times I felt very uncomfortable, like when we had to get a partner to do the problem on the board, I knew I was not a first-choice pick…more like I had to pick so they had no choice! Oh well, it is all good now and I feel now I can take any class and feel confident (okay, anything but math….please…sorry Parker). I was hoping to finish this Psychology degree by end of the year, but it looks like I will have a final research class in the spring. It does not matter, I am, for the most part, enjoying the process. I have always been fascinated by psychology and it has been so fun being back into school after all these years. Yes, things are very different lol. And, as I said, we are never too old for different.


So, comment on a new thing you will try, or a new habit you will start to get you growing AGAIN! I am going to practice my calligraphy!


I took a class with my sister-in-law and have not done since. I am going to start practicing and have a calligraphy party with friends!
