As we age, comfort becomes more important—but that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice style.

You can still look and feel incredible every single day. One powerful way to support that? Start with your closet. A calm, organized space sets the tone for a smoother, more confident morning. When your wardrobe reflects who you are now—comfortable, vibrant, and true to yourself—it becomes easier to show up for your day with intention and ease.  I have been overhauling my closet for the last 6 months and cannot believe how easy it is to get dressed when you like what's hanging and it fits!  I even added two beautiful light fixtures to create a softer feeling when walking into my closet. It is better to have 20 items in you closet that you wear than 220 while wearing the same 20 pieces.

Take note this week of everything you put on.  We all tend to wear the same items because they are comfortable and they make us feel good. Oh, and they fit.  I am still editing each week. I did one of those color match and it was funny that I was wearing the wrong colors. When I was in retail, I wore black all the time. Who knew that my colors were supposed to be warm tones of brown? Oh well, better late than never. If you want to do a color match, just ask chatgpt. Give them your hair, skin, and eye color and they can pretty much tell you. You can also give them your height and weight and it will give you silhouettes that suit you as well.

The best thing is you know exactly what you have and what you might want to add to your wardrobe…being both stylish and comfortable.

Here is what the pros suggest:

🧹 1. Start with a Clean Slate

Take everything out. Yes—everything. Lay it on your bed or a clean floor. This may feel extreme, but it’s the best way to see what you’ve got (and what’s not serving you anymore).

I will admit that I did not take everything out at one time.  I went through a first run of getting rid of everything that I did not wear, had not worn but thinking that some day I would.  Well, 5-10 years later, still hanging there.  Then, I took out in sections about 25% at a time.  Find what works for you.  I do believe if you have the time, to do it all at once.

❓ 2. Ask the Key Questions

For each item, ask:

  • Does this fit me well—today?  No, not when you lose 20 pounds, or when I will have it altered.  If you haven’t done it in the last year, probably don’t like it that much.

  • Do I feel like me in it?  Have you ever tried something on that makes you feel silly?  Or, just not you?

  • Have I worn it in the past 6–12 months?  (Coats and sweaters are an exception).

  • Would I buy it again right now?  If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go—with love and thanks.

🍂 3. Keep What Works for Fall

Set aside pieces you love that can transition into cooler weather—layered tanks, denim, light cardigans, neutral-toned skirts, and blouses. These will form your fall capsule.

🎯 4. Identify the Gaps

Once the clutter is cleared, you’ll start to see what’s missing:

  • Do you need a better pair of jeans?

  • A flattering jacket that keeps you warm in the cold restaurants- although, as I age, I am not nearly as cold.

  • Basics that layer well and feel soft on your skin.

Make a short, intentional shopping list. Maybe a fall trend item or new t-shirts in the new fall colors.

🌟 This Isn’t Just About Clothes…

It’s about identity. Clearing space in your closet clears space in your mind. It reminds you that you can let go of the old, embrace who you are now, and make room for who you’re becoming.  I had not cleared out items that were my go-tos when I was in retail.  I realized It was part of my identity and it was time to move into a new chapter in my life.  Comfort and style.  So, choose a time do visit your closet and decide if it’s working for you now.

If not, the perfect time to start fresh is now.
